Sandburg Women Drop Home Opener to Elgin 62-49

Elgin put together a tiebreaking run in the second quarter and never looked back in defeating the Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball team 62-49 on Friday night at John M. Lewis Gymnasium in the Chargers’ home opener.
Sandburg (1-1) tied the game at 20 on a spinning shot in the lane by Danayzia Stuckey (Peoria, Ill./Limestone) midway through the second quarter, but the Spartans (4-0) answered with a 13-0 run to take the lead for good.
A 3-pointer from freshman Hailey Lovetinsky (Overland Park, Kan./Spring Hill) got the Chargers within 52-44 with 8:30 to play, but Elgin scored the next 10 to open up its largest lead of the contest.
Stuckey scored 10 points and grabbed a team-best four rebounds for the Chargers. Freshman forward Yvonne Mixon (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) also added 10 points, on 4-of-4 shooting. Mixon also had a pair of blocked shots.
Rachel Dumoulin scored a game-high 24 for Elgin. The Spartans also got 18 points apiece from Mariel Franco and Andrea Bracy.
Sandburg has a quick turnaround as it hosts Waubonsee at 1 p.m. Saturday.
